== History of Device ==

The first electric motors were simple electrostatic devices created by the Scottish monk Andrew Gordon in the 1740s.

The theoretical principle behind production of mechanical force by the interactions of an electric current and a magnetic field, Ampère's force law, was discovered later by André-Marie Ampère in 1820. 

The conversion of electrical energy into mechanical energy by electromagnetic means was demonstrated by the British scientist Michael Faraday in 1821. 

In 1827, Hungarian physicist Ányos Jedlik started experimenting with electromagnetic coils. in 1828 Jedlik demonstrated the first device to contain the three main components of practical DC motors: the stator, rotor and commutator.

Alternating current technology was rooted in Michael Faraday’s and Joseph Henry’s 1830-31 discovery that a changing magnetic field can induce an electric current in a circuit. Faraday is usually given credit for this discovery since he published his findings first.

In 1832, French instrument maker Hippolyte Pixii generated a crude form of alternating current when he designed and built the first alternator.

A DC motor is any of a class of rotary electrical machines that converts direct current electrical power into mechanical power.An AC motor is an electric motor driven by an alternating current (AC).

Electric motors are used to produce linear or rotary force (torque), and should be distinguished from devices such as magnetic solenoids and loudspeakers that convert electricity into motion but do not generate usable mechanical powers, which are respectively referred to as actuators and transducers.

== Physical Implementation and Design ==

A DC motor is a class of rotary electrical machines that converts direct current electrical power into mechanical power. The most common types rely on the forces produced by magnetic fields. 

Nearly all types of DC motors have some internal mechanism, either electromechanical or electronic, to periodically change the direction of current flow in part of the motor.

DC motors were the first type widely used, since they could be powered from existing direct-current lighting power distribution systems. A DC motor's speed can be controlled over a wide range, using either a variable supply voltage or by changing the strength of current in its field windings.

An AC motor is an electric motor driven by an alternating current (AC). 

The AC motor commonly consists of two basic parts, an outside stationary stator having coils supplied with alternating current to produce a rotating magnetic field, and an inside rotor attached to the output shaft producing a second rotating magnetic field. 
The rotor magnetic field may be produced by permanent magnets, reluctance saliency, or DC or AC electrical windings.


Motor supply
A DC motor is usually supplied through slip ring commutator as described above. AC motors' commutation can be either slip ring commutator or externally commutated type, can be fixed-speed or variable-speed control type, and can be synchronous or asynchronous type. Universal motors can run on either AC or DC.

Motor control
Fixed-speed controlled AC motors are provided with direct-on-line or soft-start starters.
Variable speed controlled AC motors are provided with a range of different power inverter, variable-frequency drive or electronic commutator technologies.
The term electronic commutator is usually associated with self-commutated brushless DC motor and switched reluctance motor applications.

Found in applications as diverse as industrial fans, blowers and pumps, machine tools, household appliances, power tools, and disk drives, electric motors can be powered by direct current (DC) sources, such as from batteries, motor vehicles or rectifiers, or by alternating current (AC) sources, such as from the power grid, inverters or generators

Small DC motors are used in tools, toys, and appliances. 

The universal motor can operate on direct current but is a lightweight motor used for portable power tools and appliances.
 
Larger DC motors are used in propulsion of electric vehicles, elevator and hoists, or in drives for steel rolling mills.
 
The advent of power electronics has made replacement of DC motors with AC motors possible in many applications.

Industrial type of AC motors are widely used for pumps, blowers, conveyors and other industrial machinery.
